New Salem Borough is served and protected by York New Salem Community Fire
Company No. 1, located at 65 East George Street. The Fire Company serves the entire Borough as well as assisting neighboring municipalities. The volunteer fire company is a separate entity from the Borough and is responsible for its own operating budget. New Salem Borough does include the Fire Company in their annual budget, but the majority of funds are raised by the Fire Company through Tuesday evening Bingo and supper, Chicken Barbecue Dinners and other various activities. Additional information available by calling 717-792-0634. This is also the polling place for New Salem Borough.

Refuse & Recycling

Refuse and Recycling collection takes place once a week on Wednesdays. Collection days that fall on or after the holiday will be delayed one day. EXCEPTION: If holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, there is no change in service prior to or after the holiday. The Borough’s contracted hauler is Penn Waste, Inc. www.pennwaste.com

No containers or bags may be placed for collection earlier than 4:00 p.m. the day before the collection day. Empty containers should be removed from the curbside before 11:00 p.m. on the day of collection.

Recycling is mandatory in New Salem Borough.  Acceptable items can be placed in the

Sanitary Sewer Collection System

Construction of the New Salem Sewer Collection System with conveyance of flow to North Codorus Township Waste Water Treatment Plant began in March 2006. The first Borough property was connected to the sewer January 22, 2007. The current annual rate for sewer is $975. Of that amount, approximately $232 is paid to North Codorus Township Sewer Authority for Treatment at the plant located in the Township. The remaining portion of the receipts is used to pay the annual debt payment and expenses associated with the Sewer System.
